Face Fix vs Ceiling Fix: Which Bracket Type Do You Have?

Your track is either fixed to the wall above the window (face fix) or straight into the ceiling (ceiling fix). Your order confirmation shows which brackets you have.

Brackets screw into wall

Face fix (wall)

Most common. Track sits at the measured height and extends past each side so curtains stack off the glass.

Brackets screw up into ceiling

Ceiling fix

Great for floor-to-ceiling looks or where there's no room above the window. Fix into ceiling joists or use suitable plasterboard anchors.

Check for hidden servicesBefore drilling, check for electrical cables and water pipes – especially directly above or beside windows. A stud / cable detector is a worthwhile investment.
Step-by-step

How to Install Your Curtain Track & Hang Curtains – 6 Steps

1

Step 1: Mark the Track Height & Width

Hold the track up to the wall (or ceiling) and centre it over the window. Lightly mark each end with a pencil.

  • Track sits at the measured height and width.
  • Floor-length curtains should finish about 10–15mm off the floor – double-check your track height against your curtain drop.
Use your levelDraw a light level line between the end marks. Floors and ceilings are rarely perfectly straight, so trust the level, not the ceiling line.
Measuredheight Measured width ↑ 10–15mm floor gap

Step 2: Mark the Bracket Positions (Max 650mm Apart)

Mark a bracket about 100mm in from each end of the track, then space the remaining brackets evenly in between – no more than 650mm apart.

  • Add an extra bracket where two curtains meet in the centre (centre-opening tracks) or at any track join.
  • Heavier blockout or double curtains? Space brackets closer (around 600mm) for extra support.
  • Make sure no bracket sits where a glider or overlap arm needs to pass.

Even spacing keeps the track straight and gliders running smoothly

Step 3: Pre-Drill & Fix the Brackets

Drill a pilot hole at each mark, insert a wall plug or anchor if needed, then screw the brackets in firmly. Check each bracket lines up with your level line.

SurfaceHow to fix
Timber frame / studScrew straight in after a small pilot hole.
PlasterboardFind the stud or lintel where possible; otherwise use heavy-duty plasterboard anchors.
Brick / concreteUse a masonry bit (hammer setting) and wall plugs.
CeilingFix into ceiling joists, or use spring toggles / heavy-duty anchors.
Level line
Pre-drill, plug, then screw – check level as you go

Step 4: Clip the Track onto the Brackets

Hook the back edge of the track into the bracket clips and push up firmly until it clicks into place. Work from one end to the other.

  • Make sure the gliders face downwards and the end stops are in place so gliders can't slide out.
  • Centre-opening track? The two overlap arms should meet in the middle.
  • Slide the gliders along the full length – they should run smoothly with no catching.
Count the glidersEach curtain needs one glider per hook (pinch pleat) or per carrier on the tape (S-fold). If you have spares, leave them parked at the ends.

Step 5: Hang the Curtains

Start at the outside edge (the wall end) and work towards the centre, attaching each hook or carrier to a glider. The last hook at each end goes into the end stop / return so the curtain stays put.

  • Two people make this much easier – one holds the weight of the fabric while the other clips in.
  • Check the curtain hangs evenly and just clears the floor.
  • See S-fold vs pinch pleat below for heading-specific tips.

Step 6: Train the Folds (48–72 Hours)

Open the curtains fully so they stack at the sides. Run your hands down each fold so the fabric falls into even pleats or waves, then loosely tie the stack with soft ribbon or fabric strips.

  • Leave tied for 48–72 hours so the fabric "remembers" its shape.
  • Packing creases usually drop out within 1–2 weeks of hanging. If needed, steam lightly from a distance – check the fabric care label first.
Pro finishRepeat the dressing process a couple of times in the first week. It makes a big difference to how neatly your curtains stack long-term.

S-Fold vs Pinch Pleat Curtains: Installation Differences

S-FOLD

Soft, continuous wave

S-fold curtains use a special tape and carriers spaced evenly along the track, creating a relaxed, modern wave.

  1. Start at the end-stop and snap each carrier on the tape onto a glider, one by one.
  2. Don't skip a carrier – the even spacing is what forms the wave.
  3. Alternate the wave direction (in / out) so the curtain sits evenly in front of the track.
PINCH PLEAT

Tailored, structured folds

Pinch pleat curtains have hooks fitted into the heading tape behind each pleat for a classic, formal look.

  1. Check all hooks are inserted at the same height in the heading tape.
  2. Hook one pin per glider, starting at the outside return.
  3. Hook the first and last pins into the end stop / return so the edges sit neatly.
Sheer + blockout

How to Install Double Curtains (Sheer + Blockout)

Double curtains come with a dual track so you can draw the sheer and blockout layers independently. Install the track exactly as above, then hang the layers in this order.

  • Back track (closest to the window): sheer. Hang this first – it's much harder to reach once the front layer is up.
  • Front track (room side): blockout. Hang second, using the same outside-in method.
  • Check both layers clear the floor and neither layer catches on the other when opening and closing.
  • If your order labels show a different layer arrangement, follow the labels.
Day & nightDraw the sheer during the day for privacy and soft light; close the blockout at night for darkness and better insulation.

Curtain Care, Maintenance Tips & Child Safety

Open & close gently

Draw curtains from the leading edge (or with the wand) rather than tugging the fabric. This protects the gliders and keeps the folds neat.

Keep them clean

Vacuum regularly with a soft brush attachment. For anything more, follow the care label on your curtain.

Track maintenance

If gliders start to stick, wipe the inside of the track with a dry cloth. A little silicone spray helps – never use oil.

Child safetyHand-drawn curtains have no cords. If your curtains use a cord-draw system, the cord must be tensioned and secured with the safety device supplied, in line with Australian Government requirements. Keep all cords well out of reach of children.

Want zero cords for complete child safety? Our motorised blinds and curtains are the safest choice for homes with young children.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions – Curtain Installation Sydney

How high above the window should my curtain track go?

Install the track at the height you measured for your order. Your curtains are custom made to that measurement, so the track height and curtain drop need to match.

How far should the track extend past the window?

Install the track at the width you measured for your order, centred over the window. Your track is cut to that measurement.

My curtains are slightly too long or too short – what should I do?

Before re-hanging anything, check the track is level and at the planned height – small adjustments to bracket height often fix it. If the curtain still doesn't fit, contact us with your order number and measurements and we'll help.

There are creases in my new curtains. Will they drop out?

Yes – packing creases usually settle within 1–2 weeks of hanging. You can speed things up with a light steam from a distance, following the fabric care label.

Can I install curtains into plasterboard?

Yes, but fix into a stud or lintel wherever possible. If that's not an option, use heavy-duty plasterboard anchors, and space brackets closer together for heavy blockout or double curtains.
