Is Motorisation Worth It for Your Home?

Most showrooms won't tell you this: motorisation isn't right for every window. A single easy-to-reach bedroom blind rarely justifies the upgrade. But there are situations where it genuinely transforms daily life — and the difference in cost over the life of the product is surprisingly small.

We've installed motorisation across hundreds of Sydney homes. Here's the honest picture of when it's worth every dollar, and when a well-made manual blind is the smarter call.

The short version: Motorisation earns its cost fastest when windows are hard to reach, used multiple times a day, very large, or in a room where scheduled automation genuinely saves energy or improves sleep.

For a single small bedroom window you open once in the morning — a good manual roller blind at a fraction of the cost does the job just as well.

If you have three or more windows you'd motorise, the per-window cost drops and the lifestyle uplift becomes real.

Motorise — it'll pay off

  • Hard-to-reach windows — high stairwell windows, skylights, windows behind furniture or a kitchen bench you can't easily stand in front of
  • Large or heavy blinds — wide roller blinds over 2m, long curtain tracks, or outdoor awnings that take real effort to operate manually

Manual is the better call

  • Single easy-to-reach window — if you can pull a cord comfortably and only do it once a day, the premium doesn't stack up
  • Rental property fitting-out — unless the property is premium, budget cordless rollers or PVC Venetians give better yield; tenants rarely value motorisation at the rent premium it costs
  • Very short fabric drops — small windows under 600mm that barely need adjusting; the motor is larger than the blind needs
  • You want to set-and-forget for years — battery motors need recharging every 6–12 months; if a maintenance task of any kind bothers you and you can't run power to the window, stick with manual

Q01 — Most asked

How long does the battery actually last — and how do I recharge it?

Under normal daily use, 6 to 12 months on a single charge. The range is wide because it depends on blind size and how often you operate it: a large 2m wide blind opened twice daily drains faster than a small bedroom blind set to one scheduled movement per day.

Recharging is easy: the motor has a micro-USB or magnetic port on the end cap — plug in a standard USB charger (the same as a phone charger). A full charge takes 4–6 hours. You don't remove the motor; it charges in place.

Practical tip: Add a calendar reminder for every 8 months. Most clients recharge once a year and never think about it again. The motor gives a warning beep when battery gets low, so you won't be caught out suddenly.

What happens if the battery dies — or the power goes out?

Battery motor: If the battery runs flat, you can still move the blind manually — slowly pull the tube by hand (the motor free-wheels). It's not smooth, but it works until you recharge. There's no power outage issue because battery motors run independently of mains power.

Hardwired motor: If the power goes out, the motor stops. Most hardwired motors have a manual override — a small crank point on the tube end that lets you raise or lower by hand. We show every client how to use it at installation.

How noisy are the motors? Will it wake the baby?

ALPHA tubular motors operate at under 35 decibels — quieter than a whispered conversation (which measures around 40dB). You'll hear a very faint hum if you're standing next to the window, but from across the room it's essentially silent.

We've installed in nurseries specifically because parents want to close the blind mid-nap. The ALPHA motor won't wake a sleeping child.

For comparison: a refrigerator hums at ~40dB; a quiet library is ~30dB. ALPHA motors sit right in between.

Can I motorise the blinds I already have?

For roller blinds: yes, in most cases. If your existing tube is 38mm or 45mm diameter and the fabric is in good condition, a battery motor can be inserted. We check this at the measure — it takes about 30 seconds.

For curtains: existing manual rods and eyelet curtains cannot be motorised directly. The track needs to be replaced with a motorised curtain track. The curtains themselves stay the same; only the track changes.

Not retrofittable: very old fabric rollers on proprietary tubes, timber Venetians, and Roman blinds (Roman requires a specific motor type — ask us).

Do I need an electrician, and what does that cost?

Battery motors: no electrician needed. The installer fits, programs and pairs the motor in one visit. This is why battery is popular for apartments and homes where running cables isn't practical.

Hardwired motors: yes, a licensed electrician is required to wire to the 240V circuit. If you're building or renovating, have your electrician run conduit to each window during the build — this costs very little at that stage. Retrofitting wiring into an existing wall is more disruptive and expensive.

Our recommendation: If you're renovating, always run conduit even if you're not installing motors now. You'll thank yourself later.
Q06

Does it work with Apple HomeKit / Google Home / Alexa?

Google Home and Amazon Alexa: Yes, direct connection via the ALPHA Wi-Fi motor and app — no extra hub needed. "Hey Google, close the bedroom blinds" works out of the box.

Apple HomeKit: Yes, via a Matter-compatible bridge (a small hub that connects to your router). Once set up, your blinds appear in the Home app and work with Siri and HomeKit automations. We can advise on compatible hubs at your measure.

No smart home? The ALPHA remote is included. The app and voice control are optional extras — you don't need them to enjoy motorisation.

Can one remote control all my blinds?

Yes. ALPHA multi-channel remotes control up to 15 individual channels — you can assign each blind to its own channel, or group windows by room. One press for "Bedroom all up" or "Living room 50%" is standard.

Through the app, you can group blinds any way you like and create scenes: "Movie mode" (all down, 80%), "Morning" (all up), "Away" (random open/close schedule for security).

I'm in a strata apartment — do I need body corporate approval?

Battery motorised blinds: typically no approval needed. Because there's no wiring work, battery motors fall under the same category as changing a light globe — they don't affect common property or building structure.

Hardwired motors: yes, approval is usually required, as they involve electrical work. Most bodies corporate approve this readily with a licenced electrician certificate. We can provide a product specification letter for your strata manager.

For strata: Battery motor + white or neutral backing fabric is usually all that's needed. Check your by-laws for external appearance requirements.

Outdoor Awnings & Exterior Blinds

Large, heavy loads — hardwired recommended

Outdoor awnings and external roller blinds are larger, heavier, and exposed to wind — they need a more powerful motor and, ideally, a hardwired power source. Battery motors can handle some outdoor blinds, but large awnings over pergolas and alfresco areas are best served by 240V hardwired motors.

Many clients integrate outdoor awnings with wind sensors: the awning automatically retracts when wind speed exceeds a safe threshold. If you're building or renovating, running conduit to the outdoor area now costs almost nothing and avoids expensive retrofitting later.

What's the difference between a sunscreen and a blockout motorised blind?

Sunscreen fabric filters harsh glare and UV while keeping the view and allowing some natural light into the room. A 3% or 5% openness sunscreen cuts afternoon glare without closing the room. These fabrics do not achieve darkness — not suitable for bedrooms.

Blockout fabric blocks 99–100% of light when properly installed with a side-channel cassette system. These go in bedrooms, nurseries, home cinemas, and any space where full darkness is needed. The motor, controls, and installation are identical — only the fabric is different.

For bedrooms: always specify blockout with a side-channel cassette. A blockout fabric without cassettes still allows some light around the edges.
Can I set schedules without a smart home system?

Yes. The ALPHA app (iOS and Android) connects directly to Wi-Fi motors over your home network — no Google Home, Alexa, or Apple HomeKit account required. From the app you can set daily schedules, group blinds into rooms, and create scenes.

If you don't want to use an app at all, the ALPHA multi-channel remote comes included with every motor. The remote controls all your blinds independently of Wi-Fi or any smart home system.

How do I recharge the battery motor — do I have to take it down?

No removal needed. The ALPHA battery motor has a micro-USB or magnetic charging port on the end cap of the motor, accessible from the side of the mounted blind. Plug in a standard USB-A cable, leave it for 4–6 hours, and you're done.

The blind stays mounted, programmed, and in position throughout. You don't need to re-programme limit stops or re-pair the remote after recharging.

Can I move motorised blinds if I redecorate or relocate?

Battery motorised blinds: yes, they're fully portable. The blind comes down (two screws per bracket), reinstalls in the new location, and is re-programmed for the new window — travel limits take about two minutes to reset. Renters often take battery motorised blinds when they move.

Hardwired motors: the blind can be moved but the 240V wiring stays in the wall. For renters or anyone who plans to move, battery is almost always the right choice.

Can I move motorised blinds if I redecorate or relocate?

Battery motorised blinds: yes, they're fully portable. The blind comes down (two screws per bracket), reinstalls in the new location, and is re-programmed for the new window — travel limits take about two minutes to reset. Renters often take battery motorised blinds when they move.

Hardwired motors: the blind can be moved but the 240V wiring stays in the wall. For renters or anyone who plans to move, battery is almost always the right choice.
