How to Measure for Roman Blinds

How to Measure for Roman Blinds (DIY Guide)

Follow these steps to get accurate measurements for your custom Roman blinds. We recommend using a metal tape measure and recording all sizes in millimetres (mm).

Before You Start

  • Roman blinds are typically face fit (outside mount). This installs the blind on the wall or architrave above the window for best clearance and light control.
  • Check for obstructions: window/door handles, mullions, tiles, pelmets, skirting, switches, or adjacent walls.
  • Use a sturdy step ladder for high windows and measure twice for accuracy.

Tools You’ll Need

  • Metal tape measure (mm)
  • Pencil & notepad
  • Level (optional, recommended)
  • Step ladder (if required)

Choose Your Fit Type

Face Fit (Recommended)

Mounted to the architrave or wall above the window. Best for maximum clearance, light block, and to stack fabric above the glass when raised.

Recess Fit (Inside Mount)

Not commonly recommended for Roman blinds because stacked fabric can reduce glass clearance and light. If you prefer recess fit, ensure enough depth for hardware and fabric stack.

How to Measure – Face Fit (Outside Mount)

1) Width (W)

  1. Measure the outside width you want the blind to cover. We recommend extending past the window opening for better blockout:
    • Each side: add 50–100 mm beyond the opening where possible.
    • Total width: opening width + left allowance + right allowance.
  2. Check for nearby walls, wardrobes, or obstacles that limit the side overlaps.

Order as: W = desired finished width (mm).

2) Drop/Height (H)

  1. Measure from the top fixing line (usually above the architrave) down to where you want the blind to finish:
    • Top allowance: add 100–150 mm above the window to mount the blind so the stack clears the glass when raised.
    • Finish at sill: extend 60–100 mm below the sill for better coverage (if wall space allows).
    • Finish to floor: stop ~10–30 mm above the floor to avoid rubbing.

Order as: H = desired finished drop (mm).

3) Final Check

  • Confirm there’s enough space above the window for the fabric stack (Romans stack taller than rollers).
  • Note the control side (left/right) and control type if applicable (chain drive or cord & cleat/lock, per product options).
  • Record one finished width and one finished drop per blind.

How to Measure – Recess Fit (Inside Mount)

Only if you understand the limitations and have adequate recess depth.

  1. Measure the recess width at top, middle, and bottom. Record the smallest as your width (mm).
  2. Measure the recess drop at left, centre, and right. Record the smallest as your drop (mm).
  3. Check the recess depth is sufficient for the headrail and stacked fabric so the blind won’t protrude.

Order as: “Recess Fit” and supply the exact recess sizes (we’ll make suitable allowances if applicable to our product spec).

Large Windows & Practical Notes

  • Very wide Roman blinds can show slight fabric wavering along pockets; this is normal for sewn-pocket construction on oversized widths.
  • For extra-wide spans, consider multiple blinds side-by-side (with matched pocket alignment where available).

Child Safety

All chain/cord controls must be installed with compliant tensioners/cleats and kept out of reach of children. Follow the installation instructions and safety labels supplied with your order.

FAQs

Why is face fit recommended for Roman blinds?

Face fit lets you mount higher so the fabric stack clears the glass when raised, maximising daylight and reducing view loss.

Should I add my own deductions?

For face fit supply the finished size you want. For recess fit supply exact recess sizes (we’ll handle any standard allowances if required by our product spec).

What if my window isn’t square?

Use the smallest width and drop from your three measurements to ensure the blind fits.
